"A new packaging concept,
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is growing rapidly in the food
packaging market segment. This relatively new technology allows
improved product quality, freshness and shelf life while providing
convenience to the consumer and added-value to the produce processor."
(D.J. Michiels, Fresh produce: packaging films fastest growing market,
ANTEC '95/223948)
MAP requires a high gas permeable
polymer film to create a "breathable" environment for numerous packaging
applications. These high permeability films also protect against
undesirable contamination and unwanted bacteria.
One such polymer is methylpentene
copolymer (PMP), commonly known as TPX®
a registered trademark of Mitsui Chemicals Inc. It has very high
gas permeability as much as ten times greater than LDPE. TPX®
is used for MPA with applications in the food and medical packaging
markets.
